Silly Sock Day!

Happy Monday!  We had a fun silly sock day at school today!  When we got to the carpet, we took off our shoes so we could look at each other's silly socks!  Everyone got a turn to describe his/her silly socks.  There were striped socks, spotted socks, mismatched socks, toe socks, character socks, and so much more!

We even danced in our socks!  When the music played, we could dance as silly as we wanted.  When the music stopped, we had to freeze until the music started again.  Everyone used their good listening ears!

 

 

 

We read a story about a girl who did not want to ever take her socks off.  They got so stinky that even the skunks did not like the smell!  It was a silly story!  Miss McCabe asked everyone to promise to wear different socks to school tomorrow so our classroom doesn't get stinky! :)

Today we also learned what a pair is.  A pair is two of something.  We read a story about a sock that was missing its match.

We learned all about the letter Ss today and met our alphafriend, Sammy Seal.  We practiced making the /s/ sound and tracing sparkly, silver s.  Everyone sounded a little like snakes! :)

We found the letter s in our daily message and circled every s.  There were three!

Then we sorted socks into piles by type of sock.  There were striped socks, spotted socks, and solid socks!

We also visited centers.  At Mrs. DeKeyser's center, there were two jobs.  One task was to make a name spiderweb!  We had to trace over our names with glue while identifying each letter.  Then we sprinkled silver glitter over the glue.  After shaking off the extra glitter, our name magically appeared!  Then we drew spiders with 8 legs on the web.

While waiting for a turn to make a name spiderweb, children went on a spider scavenger hunt!  Each child got a clipboard and had to hunt for spiders in the classroom.  When they found the spider, they had to find its match on their piece of paper and color it the same color as the spider they found.  Miss McCabe hid the spiders in some tricky places!  When your child brings the scavenger hunt sheet home, take some time to review the colors, letters, and numbers on their sheet!

 

At the second center, children got to play in the Early Childhood classroom.  When they came back, they worked on making their letter Ss alphabet book page.  Each child at this center made black thumbprint stamps on the letter Ss.  Then he/she had to draw eyes and 8 legs for each spider thumbprint.  Counting 8 legs was a little tricky!

Children at this center also did a spiderweb letter sort.  They had to find spiders with their assigned letter to glue on their web.

At Miss McCabe's center, we read a silly book about the letter Ss.  In the story, the seal made a silly sandwich covered with items, such as spaghetti, spinach, sardines, and so many more things!  All the animals (snake, spider, salamander, etc.) thought it was silly! 

Then we played spiderweb bingo!  Each child got a spiderweb with letters and numbers on it.  When a letter or number was called, the children got to mark it with a plastic spider.  When the spiderweb was full of spiders, they won!  When your child plays this game at school, he/she will bring home the bingo board.  You can easily play at home using objects such as Cheerios, m&m's, pennies, or other small items!  This would be a great game to review letters and numbers!

We also had fun playing in the classroom and were busy doing a variety of different activities.

 Finding items that begin with s, such as salt and spaghetti!

For art, we marble painted spiderwebs!  Then we glued together our own spider to stick on the spiderweb!

After snack, we sang the song "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" together.  Then we changed "itsy bitsy" to new words, such as "huge, gigantic spider," "medium sized spider," and "teeny baby spider."

We read some different versions and compared/contrasted them.

Then we also learned the song "Spider on the Floor" by Raffi.

We each got a spider ring to use while singing the song!  We had to listen and put the spider on each body part that was named!  See if your child can remember some of the song!

Tomorrow there will be a substitute teacher in the classroom again while I continue to assess children.  These assessments will be shared with you during conferences.
