Letter Ff

Happy Monday!  Today we learned a new letter - Ff!  We met our alphafriend, Fifi Fish, and read some books to help us learn some words that start with Ff and the sound it makes.  Your child got to bring a letter Ff book home.  If it is completed and returned to school, I will put a sticker on it!

We also met feather f.  There is a special way to say hello to feather f!  We practiced making the /f/ sound and put our hands in front of our faces.  When we make the /f/ sound, we can feel air blowing on our hands!  Then we used our pointer fingers to "tickle" feather f and make the /f/ sound.  We got to see the feathers move when we made the /f/ sound!

Feather f had a special surprise for us!  We closed our eyes and put our hands out.  When we opened them, we each had a feather!  Then we learned a new song called "Take a Feather."  In the song, we had to listen to which body part to put our feather on.  The end of the song was the most fun - we got to blow our feathers in the air and try to catch them!  There was a lot of laughter!

We also pretended to firefighters.  Miss McCabe was the chief firefighter.  Whenever a call came in, she chose someone to go put out the fire.  When they came back, they had to report what kind of fire they put out.  We had all sorts of crazy fires - a fence fire, a fan fire, a fire truck fire, a finger fire, a foot fire, and so much more!  At the end, we realized that all the types of fires we put out began with the letter Ff!

Then we visited centers.  At Mrs. DeKeyser's center, we played a fire truck game.  Each child chose a fire truck and had to roll the die to find out how many spaces to move.  The goal was to collect water from the fire hydrants and make it to the house on fire so we could put it out!  This game worked on counting skills, one-to-one correspondence, and color recognition.  It also was a great game to practice taking turns!

At Miss McCabe's center, we made a firefighter rhyming booklet.  We had to try to figure out the missing words and glue the correct picture on each page.  Everyone was excited to find rhyming words, such as cats and hats, tires and fires, and alarm and harm!  See if your child can read his/her booklet to you when it comes home!

The third center got to play a dalmation letter game.  Everyone got a chance to roll the die and identify the letter rolled (either a F, L, f, or l).  Then each child had to find the spot on the dalmation with the corresponding letter and color it in.  Play continued until all the spots were colored.

There was massive excitement in our classroom at playtime!  We now have a Fire Station set up in our dramatic play area!  Everyone wanted a turn to play in there!  Since there are 4 firefighter hats, only 4 children could go in at a time.  Everyone did a nice job of taking turns.  We talked about how if we did not get a turn to go in today, it is okay because the Fire Station will be up all week!  We had fun putting on firefighter clothing and pretending to put out fires!

The fire trucks and sand in the sensory table were also popular.  Coloring firefighters at the writing center was also crowded today.

For art, we got to fingerpaint because fingerpaint starts with the letter Ff!  We mixed red and yellow fingerpaint together and discovered that when those colors are mixed, it creates the color orange!  Then we sprinkled on glitter to make it sparkle like flames of fire.  Finally we glued on the letters Ff and a fire truck.  These will be part of our alphabet books!

We enjoyed reading the story Alphabet Rescue and finding the letter f in the story.  It was a great book to use to discuss the difference between capital and lowercase letters!

Then we learned the nursery rhyme "Jack Be Nimble."  After identifying the rhyming words, we talked about whether or not it would be safe to jump over a real candlestick.  The consensus was that it would not be safe.  Everyone agreed that Miss McCabe's pretend candlestick would be safe though.  We practiced chanting the nursery rhyme using our own names instead.  When it was our turn, we got to try jumping over Miss McCabe's candlestick!

In your child's folder, there are some activities you can do together to go along with the nursery rhyme "Jack Be Nimble."

After playing outside, it was time to go home.

Some important reminders:
  • Please dress your child in warm clothes tomorrow.  We plan to go on a LONG walk in the school forest with the Toneys' (weather permitting).  Warm clothing will be necessary!
  • Book orders are due tomorrow.  Very few orders have come in.  Remember that our class gets free books with every order placed!  These books are used in our classroom and for book check-out!  You can also receive a coupon for a free $5 book with your next order if you place an order online.
See you tomorrow!
