We met our Alphafriend, Larry Lion. Do you know what his favorite letter is? We learned that he likes the letter Ll because it is the first letter in his name!
Then we spent some time talking about the differences between the capital and lowercase Ll. Miss McCabe helped us learn how to make letter Ll's special sound. We thought it was funny to make the tip of our tongues touch our front teeth while making the /l/ sound! Miss McCabe let us practice saying hello to ladder l. We tickled (traced) ladder l with our pointer fingers while making the /l/ sound. That is the special way that ladder l likes to say "hello."
Next we practiced listening for the /l/ sound while reading a silly story about a lamb that liked to laugh at her friends, the ladybug, llama, lizard, lion, and leopard. Her friends didn't like it until one day she learned a lesson. On the last page, we enjoyed looking at a picture and identifying all the objects that started with the /l/ sound, such as lake, log, lily pad, lollipop, lemon, leaf, and so much more!
We also read a special letter Ll book. The last page was silly - and we were excited to hear a rhyme! Your child got to bring home his/her own special letter Ll booklet today. I explained that if he/she took the time to color the pictures nicely, circle all the Ll's, decorate the cover with items beginning with Ll (by either drawing a picture, cutting out magazine pictures, putting on stickers, etc.), and bring the booklet back to school, I will put a sticker on the cover! They were very excited about it and I hope you will take the time to also reinforce the letter Ll and its sound at home! We talked about how the letters are important to help us learn to read and write words! How would we know how to write our friends' names if we don't know our letters?!
We even made a line of leaves. Then we had to lay on the floor by the long line to see if we were longer than the line of leaves! For most of us, the line of leaves was longer!
Then we talked about the different colors leaves turn in fall and how leaves have different shapes. We read the story We're Going on a Leaf Hunt and discussed the different types of leaves they found on their hunt.
We went on our own leaf hunt outside! Each child got his/her own special bag to put in the leaves he/she found. We will use the leaves collected throughout the week. Then your child can bring home any leaves that are left at the end of the week. On our leaf hunt, we found red, orange, yellow, brown, and green leaves. There were small, medium, and large leaves. Some leaves were pointy while others were rounded.
We even ate snack outside at the picnic tables! It was a beautiful day to be outside!
Today we also visited centers. One center worked on counting, one-to-one correspondence, and number identification 1-3. They had to roll the die and count how many dots were on it. Then the child had to find the corresponding number on his/her tree and stamp it with a bingo dauber. By the end when all the numbers were covered, each child had a colorful fall tree!
At another center, we read the story Brown Leaf, Brown Leaf. We talked about the colors leaves can be in fall. Can they be blue? No! Then we made our own booklet about the colors leaves can be in fall. See if your child can "read" it to you when it comes home!
At the third center, we made letter Ll leaf rubbings for our alphabet books. It was neat to see the leaf veins show up on our paper when we rubbed over a leaf with a crayon! Upon finishing, we practiced sorting leaves by color, shape, or size. Most children chose to sort by color.
We also played. Miss McCabe put out a special farmer's market in the dramatic play area. We enjoyed playing with the apples and making apple pie for our friends! The leaves in the sensory table were also popular. Hidden in the leaves were acorns and spiders! The leaf stencils were also in high demand at the writing center.
Today we also worked with liquid watercolor paints. We learned how to use an eye dropper to squeeze different colors of watercolors onto a coffee filter leaf. It was a little tricky, but the leaves turned out to be very vibrant in color! When they are dry, we will use our fine motor skills to cut out the leaves!
In the afternoon, we got to learn a new fall leaf song. Each of us got a leaf. When our color was named in the song, we got to go in the middle of the circle and dance with our leaf. It was a lot of fun!
