Today was another busy day in 4K! After writing our names for sign-in, we learned a new hello song called "Rise and Shine." Then we spent some time reviewing our new letter Ll. We made a list of words that we knew started with the letter Ll. Everyone kept trying to think of tricky words for Miss McCabe to draw on the easel!
We read the story Leaf Man today. It was a neat story about how the wind blew a leaf man all over. There were animals on each of the pages made out of leaves! It was neat to look at! The children were told that they could choose to make their own leaf animals using the leaves they collected yesterday during playtime if they would like.
While working on our fine motor skills, we made our own construction paper leaf men (or leaf monsters as some children chose to call them)! The trickiest part was learning how to accordion fold the arms and legs! We all did a great job!
Do you know why leaves turn color? We learned that leaves need the sun to help them make food. Now that the sun isn't shining as much, they don't get enough sunlight. When they don't get enough sun, they turn colors and fall off the trees! Several children compared it to flowers because flowers need sunlight to grow. We don't see many flowers in fall and winter because there is not as much sunlight!
Today we visited one of the centers that we did not go to yesterday - making a fall leaves color booklet, playing a leaf counting and number game, sorting leaves, or making letter Ll leaf rubbings for our alphabet booklets.
We also played. Several children in the morning decided to play school. They took turns pretending to be the teacher and students. It was neat to see them "teaching" each other their numbers and colors! The train set was also popular today.
We also continued to work on making our fall leaves with eye droppers and liquid watercolors. Some children got to cut out their leaves today because they were dry.
Today was exciting because we earned our very first class BEAK award in both sessions! If another teacher sees EVERY child in the class following the rules, they can give out a class BEAK award. When our class gets 5 class awards, we can have a special day of the children's choice at school! Both morning and afternoon classes got a BEAK award for walking quietly and respectfully in the hallway. Way to go everyone! I am so happy that everyone chose to make a good choice today!
Tomorrow we will have a special visitor from Altrusa come and read us a story. Our special visitor will give us each a book to take home with us to keep. Have a great evening!
