Happy Thursday! Today we spent some time exploring apples. First we discussed what we already knew about apples. Then we read a story about an apple farmer. The story helped us learn about all the different foods that can be made from apples, such as apple cider, applesauce, apple pie, apple muffins, and so much more! We also learned what a farmer's market is.
We learned the nursery rhyme "To Market, To Market" and had fun adding new rhymes. It went:
To market, to market to buy a fat pig
Home again, home again, jiggety jig.
We added new verses that rhymed, such as:
To market, to market to buy some apples
Home again, home again, jiggety japples.
We laughed at the funny words we made! Some items that we rhymed were a dog, cake, pie, bananas, bread, eggs, carrots, and potatoes.
Today we played an apple picking game with Mrs. DeKeyser called "Hi! Ho! Apple-o," which is a little like "Hi! Ho! Cherry-o." We filled our tree with apples. Then we drew a card to tell us how many apples to pick off of the tree. When our tree was empty, then we won.
We also made name apple trees with Miss McCabe. After cutting out and gluing together our trees, we had to count the number of letters in our names. Then we put that number of apples on our trees. Finally, we had to write one letter of our name on each apple. We were so proud of our apple trees when we were done. When asked what their favorite part of the day was, many children said it was making their name apple trees.
We also played. Pretending to play school was still the choice most children made!
For snack, we spent some time exploring apples. First we cut open an apple and explored its different parts. We learned new words, such as core and flesh. We also examined the apple seeds, stem, and peel. A new discovery was that some apples are not just one color. In fact, some apples can have red with a little bit of yellow or green on them. Then came the best part - tasting different types of apples, such as Gala and Honeycrisp. We used describing words after tasting them, such as sweet, sour, and crunchy. By vote, Gala was the favorite apple between the types we tasted. We were having so much fun exploring apples that Miss McCabe forgot to take some pictures!
There was also a birthday celebration in the morning!
We also spent some time reading some great apple counting books while practicing counting to ten.
Miss McCabe also taught us an apple song about Farmer Brown using the felt board.
Then it was time to go out and play!
Next week we will focus on fire safety. Have a great weekend!
