Then we gathered with Ms. Jarvela's class and Ms. Mader's class. Together we read Big Pumpkin because it is a favorite story in all of our classes!
Next we turned on some fun music. Each class got a turn to parade in front of the other classes to show off the wonderful costumes! There was even some dancing involved for those who chose to!
Then we read another fun story together called The Little Old Woman Who Was Not Afraid of Anything! In the story, the little old lady goes for a walk in the woods when suddenly a pair of shoes start following her going clomp, clomp. Other items also begin following her on her walk. There was an action for every item. The big, orange pumpkin head was the most fun! Ask your child was the pumpkin head said in the story! When she gets home, there is a knock on the door and the pumpkin head becomes sad because it doesn't scare the old woman. She has an idea that could help make the pumpkin head happy. Ask her child what happened at the end of the story!
Then we came back to the room and practiced retelling the story of the old woman. We had to cut out each of the items that followed her in the woods and glue them on our paper. See if your child can retell the story to you at home! Retelling is an important early literacy skill that you can easily practice together at home. After reading a story, ask your child to try retelling it to you by recalling the sequence of events in the story.
We had some special treats for snack. Thank you to everybody who sent in a special treat, juice, plates, or napkins for our costume day!
We played "Who Took the Pumpkin from the Pumpkin Patch" while working on name recognition.
Of course, we also had to do the "Spooky Walk" song in the dark together! Spooky also starts with the letter s!
What a fun day we had!
