Penguin Songs

Due to the early release and school delay, our penguin unit got cut a little short.  Below are some penguin songs that you may enjoy watching together at home that we did not have a chance to do this week.

Penguin Counting Fun! (PM Session)

Today it was the afternoon session's turn to come to school while the morning session got to stay home!

This afternoon we read some penguin books after reviewing all that we learned about penguins.

We visited our final center - fishing for numbers, matching upper and lowercase letters, or watching a webcam of penguins and drawing our observations.

We played.  Many children chose to do penguin pokey pinning again at playtime.

For snack, we counting out fish crackers onto special numbered penguins!  There were even some pizza flavored fish!  Yum!

To end the day, we read a silly story about a penguin named Tacky!  We also reviewed the letter Aa and stamped animals onto our letter Aa alphabet book page.  Then we did the counting jar!

The children were also excited to play in the snow outside at the end of the day!

Penguin Counting Fun! (AM Session)

This morning, we read the story Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice.  This story was a little like "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."  It was a great story to practice counting backwards or taking one away.

Another story we read was If You Were a Penguin.  We talked about some things that penguins do that we can also do!

We worked on vocabulary and visual discrimination skills while playing a "What's Missing? Penguin" game.

Then we visited our final center - fishing for numbers, playing a upper and lowercase letter matching game, or watching live penguins on a webcam and drawing/labeling our observations.

Of course we played!  Pokey pinning was still the activity of choice for most students.

During snack, we got to use special penguin mats instead of our normal snack mats.  There were different penguins on the mats.  Each penguin had a special number on its wing.  We had to count out that number of fish into the penguin's belly.  There were even some special pizza-flavored fish!  Afterwards we got to eat them!  Yum!

After snack, we spent some time reviewing the letter Aa.  We read a book and then worked on making our letter Aa alphabet book pages by stamping animals on the Aa!

We also enjoyed doing a penguin song and pretending to waddle like a penguin!

Due to school being closed early, the morning session got to stay at school a little longer and eat lunch in the cafeteria for the first time!  It was exciting for them and good practice for when they go to Kindergarten!

I missed my afternoon friends and hope that everyone stays safe and warm at home!

Flying Penguins?!

Today we learned about how penguins are a type of bird, but they are a special type of bird that can't fly in the sky.  We read a silly story about a penguin that wished he could fly.  The silly penguin tried all sorts of different ideas to try to fly, such as make a snow plane, wear a helicopter hat, and use a balloon.  None of them worked.  By the end of the story, the penguin discovered that if he used his flippers underwater, it would be a little like flying - only in the water instead of the sky!

We practiced swimming like a penguin too!  It was very exciting because we got to visit the gym!  In the gym we used the scooters to help us pretend to swim like a penguin.  We had to use our strong arm muscles to help pull us around the gym, which was very hard work!  Our job was to swim through the ocean to catch letter fish to feed to Miss McCabe.  The children did a nice job of helping to teach Miss McCabe the letters! :)

Afterwards we spent a little time just exploring and enjoying the scooters in the morning.  The children thought it was funny when Miss McCabe tried to catch them on the scooters in a little game of tag!

After snack, we heard about Brownie's adventures and did the counting jar.
