Sounds All Around

Today we focused mainly on our sense of hearing.  We read a story called The Listening Walk.  In the story, a girl goes on a walk and notices the many different sounds all around her.  Everyone loved hearing the different noises Miss McCabe made as she read the story!

After reading the story, we sat for a minute and just listened to all the sounds around us.  We noticed the clock ticking, other classes talking, footsteps as people walked past our classroom, a pencil sharpener, the sound of a paper cutter, and so much more!

We talked about why we are learning letters and their sounds at school - because they will help us learn to read and write!  We need letters in order to read and write.  Then we learned a song called "The Alphabet's In My Mouth" that helped us practice identifying our letters and their sounds.  Many children were excited when the letters in their names appeared in the song and the book that Miss McCabe held up as we sang!

Next we visited one center - painting with scented paint, making a five senses headband, or coloring coffee filters.

We also enjoyed playing!  It has been neat to see the children begin to learn how to take on different roles in their play and use their imaginations!

After snack, we enjoyed looking at "I Spy" books again.  Several children even used teamwork to try to find the hidden objects in the pictures.

Then we played sound lotto.  We had to use our good listening ears while Miss McCabe played different sounds to try to figure out what was making that noise.  There were all different sounds, such as a motorcycle, toilet flushing, baby crying, train, telephone, and so much more!  It was a little tricky, but fun!

Then we practiced our songs for the holiday program.  We have now learned the words and actions to half of the songs without props.  Once we know all the songs well, we will practice with the special props we will be using.
