Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! It sure sounds like it from all that the children told me! Since it snowed over the break, we began our winter unit today! The children were so excited about the snow! We read some snowmen stories and discussed the parts of a snowman. New words, such as coal, were introduced.
Check your child's folder today for a special snowman project to go along with the story Snowballs. The children are excited to create their own snow dad, snow mom, snow dog, snow cat, snow princess, snow super hero, or any other special snow person or animal with you!
During centers, we did a variety of winter activities. At Mrs. DeKeyser's table, we worked on being able to distinguish between a rectangle and a triangle. Those are two tricky shapes! We used our fine motor skills to cut out the shapes and glue them on paper to make a winter scene. Then we dipped the eraser end of a pencil into white paint to paint snow on our winter scene.
At another center, the children worked on patterning. We used special winter stamps to stamp patterns on white tissue paper. Then we got to play in Ms. Mader's classroom!
At Miss McCabe's center, we made name snowmen and tried to remember all the parts a snowman needs!
Then we played a fun game together! In the game, the goal was to collect as many cards as we could. The cards had different tasks, such as counting snowmen or identifying letters. There were special cards mixed in that had us do silly tasks, such as pretend to ice skate around the table, hop like a rabbit and collect everyone's cards, pretend to melt to the ground, and so much more! Everyone wanted the rabbit card! This was so much fun that several children chose to continue to play the game over and over during the entire playtime too! :)
During playtime, the children enjoyed playing with the rice in the sensory table. There were different sized scoops so they enjoyed exploring how much rice each scoop held.
Miss McCabe also filled some trays with salt. Everyone enjoyed using the eraser end of a pencil to write in the salt. We practiced writing our names and winter words, as well as drawing pictures in it.
There were also other areas to play. Building with pretend ice blocks (white styrofoam blocks) was also popular.
This week we will also work on making name stockings in the hopes that St. Nick will come to school to fill them! We had to sew the stockings together and glue cottonballs on the top. Then we wrote our names using glitter glue. It is a lot of fun to write our names with glitter glue!
We ate snack. The children have been so excited about patterns that they have even been creating patterns on their own during snack!
After snack, we learned about our new letter - Ii! We learned that it is a tricky letter because it makes two different sounds! We practiced saying the short i sound while tracing over a feely phonic letter - igloo i.
Then we read a silly story that had a lot of letter Ii words in it, such as iguana, island, ice cream, ice skate, igloo, and iceberg.
After that, it was time to practice our holiday songs! We are getting good. Ms. Connell, our principal, heard us singing this morning and stopped in to listen for a little while.
Then it was time to play outside. Whenever there is snow on the ground, the children must have snow pants and boots in order to go in the snow. If they don't, they are required to stay on the blacktop. There were several sad children today. When in doubt, just send all of the winter clothing to school! Your child will come home wearing it all since we play at the very end of the day. However, your child does not need to wear it all to school on the bus and is welcome to carry the snow gear to school in a bag if that is easier. Remember to send shoes if your child wears boots to school!
Just a friendly reminder that holiday program sheets are due tomorrow! We need them so we can plan based on the number of people expected and what items people sign up to bring for the treats/refreshment portion of the program!
Have a great evening!
