Today we spent a little bit of time talking about snowflakes. We need a lot of snowflakes in order to make a snowman! Did you know that all snowflakes have 6 sides and no two snowflakes look alike? We learned that today! Every time the children saw a snowflake in the story, they wanted to stop and count each of its sides. On every page, the snowflakes all had 6 sides!
We played a snowman counting game too! It was so much fun that the children asked to play it again and again! Miss McCabe sang a song and then clapped. The children had to count the claps and then find the snowman with the corresponding number. This would be a fun activity to do at home with just clapping. If you wanted to add in the numbers, just cut a sheet of paper into several rectangles, draw a snowman on each one, and write a number on each snowman. The song is to the tune of "5 Little Ducks." It goes:
10 little snowmen went out one day
Over the hills and far away
When their mother clapped ( X X X )
Only the number 3 came back.
The children are also getting to be good rhymers! We played a stocking rhyming game. The children had to figure out what toy was inside each stocking by coming up with a word that rhymed with the picture on the front of the stocking. For example, if there was a picture of a star on the stocking, they would guess "car." Then we opened up the stocking to see what toy was inside.
We also visited centers - making shape snow scenes, stamping patterns, or making name snowmen and playing a winter game.
We also had a great time playing in the classroom! I am so happy to hear the children beginning to use their words to solve problems with their friends and inviting other children to come play with them! Those are such important social skills to develop!
After a delicious snack, we read a silly story about some animals that went on a sled ride. It was similar to the song "Ten in the Bed" that we learned earlier in November.
We also built a snowman on the felt board while identifying parts of a snowman and colors.
In the morning, we had a special visitor from Altrusa. She read us a silly Froggy story. Your child can keep the book that is in his/her folder! We also played a "What's Missing? Snowman" game and learned a new word - tassel.
The afternoon session will have a visit from Altrusa next week!
To end the day, we practiced our holiday songs and played outside! Have a great evening!
