Welcome Back!

We were all so excited to be back at school today!  What a nice, calm day we had!  The children missed their friends at school and were happy to see them again!  It sounds like everyone had a good Christmas from what the children told me!

Today we did a cutting sample for our portfolios.

We began our unit on "animals in winter."  The story we read today was about a bird that was sad because all of his friends were hibernating or migrating and he thought he would be all alone throughout the winter until he met another bird that stays around in winter.  This story helped introduce different animals and the concepts of hibernation and migration.  The children were excited to learn that other animals besides bears, such as frogs, also hibernate.  We also learned that some animals adapt by growing extra fur to stay warm in winter!

We learned that not all birds migrate.  Cardinals and blue jays are two birds that usually stay around in winter.  We reviewed shapes while making our own cardinal or blue jay.

We also made bird feeders to help feed the birds that stay around in winter.  The children are excited to hang them up at home to see what birds come to visit!

We played too!  The children especially enjoyed using the watercolor paints to paint cardinals or blue jays!  They also enjoyed the real snow in the sensory table!  There was colored water with droppers and the children enjoyed dropping the colored water in the snow and watching the colors mix together!

After snack, we spent some time looking at books.

Then we learned all about our new letter Mm.  We practiced making the /m/ sound while tracing over mountain m.  The children were also excited when they realized that our new "big" word, migrate, starts with m!

We also made mitten Mm's for our alphabet books before going outside to play!

Tomorrow we will spend some time talking about animals that migrate!

Have a great evening! :)
