During circle time, we reviewed what we learned yesterday. The children even remembered the word "migration" and what it means! Way to go, 4K students! We read a silly story about a duck that decided not to migrate with his flock because he wanted to see what winter was like. He discovered that winter is cold and food is hard to find when there is so much snow! Luckily he knocked on a door and was allowed to stay in a house for the remainder of winter!
We learned that not only birds migrate, but other animals also do, such as monarch butterflies and humpback whales! We sorted some pictures of animals by whether or not they migrate.
Today we used a special puffy paint to paint clouds on our paper. Then we stuck on geese in a V formation to show that they were migrating.
We also reviewed Mat Man. Then we drew our self-portraits for our portfolios.
During playtime, watercolor painting and playing with the snow in the sensory table was quite popular again.
We had special treats during snack today. There was a birthday celebration in the afternoon!
Today was also the day to find out who the December Super Stars were. Congratulations!
We played a listening game on the carpet to review the sound the letter Mm makes. You can play this game at home too! We used blocks to cover our boards, but you could use practically anything found around the house, such as buttons, pennies, or Cheerios. I said various words and the children had to listen to see if the word started with the /m/ sound. If it did, they covered up one M on their board. If not, they did nothing. When their board was full, they won! This is a great game for listening for the beginning sounds of words, which is a skill that is also assessed on the PALS Pre-K assessment that will be done again in spring!
Today we had a lot of energy so we also visited some of our old favorite songs to get some of the wiggles out! The children were excited to do "The MacChicken Dance" because it starts with an M! We also did "The Freeze" in the morning.
Next week a summit is being held at Southern Door. As parents of children in our school, the education opportunities provided by the district directly affect your child. Please consider attending the Back to the Future summit on the evening of Wednesday, January 9th. Your unique perspective as parents is so valuable! Feel free to extend this invite to any other parents with younger children, as their children will benefit by the plans being made by the district today. If interested in attending, please register for the summit by Monday, January 7th by going to the district website (www.southerndoor.k12.wi.us) or by calling the district office at 825-7311. As partners in your child's education, we appreciate your continued support.
Have a great weekend!
