Today's story was The Hat by Jan Brett. The children enjoyed comparing the animals in this story to the animals in yesterday's story of The Mitten. In today's story, a hedgehog gets a stocking stuck on his head. All the other animals laugh at him. The hedgehog's response is to tell a reason why the stocking on his head makes sense, such as it protects him from the rain. At the end of the story, the other animals decide they would like a hat too and grab all different clothing from the clothesline. It was silly because they were wearing sweaters, gloves, and other silly clothing on their heads!
Check your child's folder for a hat project to do together at home! The children are excited to create a hat for their favorite animal from the story!
We also talked about the difference between a glove and mitten. Then we graphed which we prefer to wear outside. In the morning, the overwhelming majority of students prefer to wear gloves outside. Only one child chose mittens. In the afternoon session, the majority chose mittens.
Next we visited one of the centers from yesterday - playing hat letter bingo, making a color mitten counting booklet, or retelling the story of The Mitten using props after playing in Ms. Mader's room.
Then we had playtime.
During playtime, several children worked on making a picture of a person in a warm, winter jacket. They had to cut out the jacket and draw a face inside the hood. Then they glued on pom poms.
After snack, we spent some time looking at books.
Then we read The Three Little Kittens. The children were excited to listen for rhymes, such as kittens and mittens.
A fun part of the day was playing a mitten memory game. We had to match mittens with numbers to mittens with the corresponding number of snowflakes! We did a lot of counting!
Then it was time to go outside and play in the snow!
Have a great evening! :)
