S-S-Snakes!

Happy Tuesday!  I hope everyone had a nice weekend!  Today we continued with our zoo theme and spent some time learning about snakes.  Zookeeper Bob helped us learn that snakes use their tongues to smell!

We read some fiction stories about snakes.  One story was about a boa constrictor that was very greedy and ate everything it came across.  The children liked seeing how the boa constrictor changed sizes as it ate bigger and bigger animals.  The second story was about an anaconda.  We learned that snakes don't have bones so they can open their mouths very wide - wider than we can!

Next we worked on sequencing numbers while building a gigantic snake!  The snake was almost as long as our classroom - 30 feet (as far as a kangaroo can hop)!

We also spent some time looking at the scales on snakes and discovered that different types of snakes have different designs.  Some have stripes while others have triangles, diamonds, or even circles on their backs.  Then we made our own large snakes and chose some shapes to cut out to make a design on the back.  Several children chose to make a patterned design on the snake's back, just like they noticed in the pictures!

Then we played!  Miss McCabe put soapy water in the sensory table.  The children had a lot of fun washing our classroom toys to help get them ready for the end of the school year.

We celebrated some summer birthdays today.

After snack we made a snake stripes booklet.  The children are getting very good at reading some of the color words!  We made color patterns in the booklet.  See if your child can read his/her book to you at home tonight.
