Marsupials

Today we continued to learn about kangaroos.  The children even remembered the word "marsupial" and what it meant!  We read a story called Katy No-Pocket.  In the story, Katy was sad because she did not have a pouch to carry her joey like the other kangaroos.  Since not all animals have pouches, she asked the other animals how they carried their babies.  The alligator carries its baby on its back.  Katy tried that but her joey kept slipping off.  None of the other animal's methods worked for her.  Finally, she visited wise old owl who told her to find a pocket in the city.  She hopped to the city and found a man with a lot of pockets.  He happily gave her his apron full of pockets.  Then Katy had many pockets to carry all of her animal friends in!

We practiced sorting pictures by beginning sound into the correct pocket.

The children also did a kangaroo literacy activity today.  They had to hop around to find joeys to match each kangaroo mom.  One group worked on matching upper and lowercase letters while another group worked on rhyming.  Yet another group worked on beginning sounds and still another group worked on sight words.

We also continued to work on our T-shirts for the zoo.  Today we worked on adding handprints and will finish with the handprints on Thursday.

The children also enjoyed playtime.

It was such a beautiful day outside that we decided to eat snack outside at the picnic tables!  It was a nice treat! :)

Then we spent a little bit of time playing on the "big kid's playground" since this is the playground they will get to play on next year when they are big kindergarten students!

Afterwards we came inside to work on a special project.  It involved being creative!  The children especially enjoyed using the stickers!

Tomorrow there will be a substitute teacher in the classroom.  I will post a blog entry tomorrow with several reminders for Thursday.

Have a great evening! :)
