We read a non-fiction story to learn more about crocodiles. The children were excited to learn that crocodiles are known to eat zebras, gazelles, fish, and other animals. They are meat eaters.
We also read a fiction story about a mama crocodile. The other animals saw her put her babies inside her mouth and thought she ate them. It turns out that crocodiles carry their babies in their mouths! How strange! We also learned that they bury their eggs in the sand to help keep them warm.
During centers, we made large alligators at Mrs. DeKeyser's center. The children cut out and glued together their alligators. Inside the mouth, they drew something for their alligator to eat. Several children chose zebras, deer, gazelle, and fish. One child even chose Miss McCabe to be eaten! Then they sponge painted scales on their alligators.
At Miss McCabe's center, we had to be very brave! We had to reach into an alligator's mouth to find out what it has eaten! Then we listened for the letter each animal started with and marked the corresponding lowercase letter on our sheet. It was tricky, but fun!
The third center cut out some pictures and sorted them by whether they begin with /a/ for alligator and /c/ for crocodile.
After snack, we learned the song "Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree." We read the story and compared it to the song. Then we had a lot of fun acting out the story using monkey masks/puppets! Check your child's folder for some activities to do together at home to go with the song.
Then we went outside to play!
Tomorrow the morning session will get to work in the school garden (weather permitting). Please have your child wear old shoes and clothes that can get dirty/muddy tomorrow.
