"Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me! I'm the gingerbread man!" If you walked past our classroom today, you most certainly would have heard that phrase repeated over and over! We read the story of the gingerbread man today and compared it to our gingerbread man song. There were some similarities, but also many differences. We spent some time comparing the two versions!
Then we practiced being gingerbread men! Miss McCabe put some blankets on the floor and we pretended they were pans in the oven. Some children were chosen to lay on the blankets and pretend to be gingerbread men. We counted how many there were and when their name was said, they got up and ran away! Miss McCabe tried catching them, but the gingerbread men were too fast! Then we had to count how many gingerbread men were left. It was a lot of fun - so much fun that several children continued to act it out during playtime as well! :)
Then it was time to make our gingerbread dough! Ms. Mader's class came in to help as well! Every child got a special card telling them what ingredient to add. We had to practice counting and recognizing the numbers to know what number card came next. This activity helped us with counting, measuring, talking about handwashing, and jobs for grown-ups (such as using the mixer) and jobs for children! We also talked about our five senses while baking! Everyone enjoyed using their sense of smell for each of the ingredients! We got some funny faces when we smelled the vinegar! Our dough needed to be refrigerated overnight so tomorrow we will roll it out and cut out our gingerbread cookies!
Then we played. It has been wonderful to see the children incorporating writing into their play voluntarily! I love seeing their interest in letters and words developing! They also had a great time pretending to make gingerbread in all different areas of the classroom... sensory table, playdough, dramatic play, and even at the writing center!
We ate a delicious snack and then went to the media center to practice our holiday songs. We are getting excited that our families will come watch us in just a week!
Have a fantastic evening! :)
