If you were to walk into our classroom today, you probably would have thought you were at the zoo! For an arrival activity, the children made zoo animal headbands and of course if you are wearing an animal headband, you are naturally going to start making animal noises, at least if you are in 4K! :)
After reviewing the roles of a zookeeper, we learned from zookeeper Bob that animals can communicate with each other through the sounds they make even though they don't talk like people.
Miss McCabe played some different animal sounds. Everyone enjoyed trying to guess which zoo animal made that sound. It was a little tricky!
Then we read the story Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?. The children tried making the noises of the different animals in the story, such as a snarling leopard, fluting flamingo, and snorting hippopotamus. It was a lot of fun!
For our project today, we made giant zookeepers. They were so big that many of the children had to sit on the floor so that they would have enough space! Everyone worked so hard and I saw many children adding special details, such as pockets, buttons, eyelashes, and fingernail polish. The children were so proud of their huge zookeepers that were almost as big as them!
After snack, we drew our favorite zoo animals, being careful to add details like trees, grass, and water for the animals. We will glue these pictures inside the zookeeper's vest.
Of course we also played. The children used their animal headbands to play zoo in dramatic play. I tried to convince them to leave their headbands at school to use in dramatic play all week, but they really wanted to take them home! Some children also worked on building a zoo in the block area, complete with cages for the animals.
To end the day, we went outside to play. It was a beautiful day to be outside!
