Then we headed off to the woods to learn how maple syrup is made! Mr. Toneys showed us how to tap a tree. We watched him drill a hole. It was neat seeing the sap come out of the tree. We caught drops of sap and tasted them. It didn't taste much like syrup and was almost like water. Then we got to see how they boiled the sap to make the water evaporate so that the sugar would be more concentrated. Finally, we got to taste the maple syrup by dipping an animal cracker in some finished syrup. It was a neat experience!
After we got back to our classroom, we read a story called Little Lumpty. In the story, Little Lumpty was curious about the big wall that Humpty Dumpty had fallen off of. His mom kept telling him not to go near the wall, but Little Lumpty could not resist! One day, he took a ladder and climbed up the wall. He was enjoying the wall until he looked down and saw how far down to the ground it was. Little Lumpty became scared and called for help from the townspeople. At this point in the story, we stopped reading and brainstormed some ideas about how we could get Little Lumpty down from the wall. There were several great ideas, such as a trampoline, water slide, hot-air balloon, driving a car up a ramp, and even having Humpty slide down a giraffe's neck.
Then we went to the table and illustrated our own idea for how we could get Humpty down from the wall. The children worked very hard on this project!
Afterwards, we shared our ideas for getting Humpty Dumpty down from the wall. Then we read the end of the story to find out how he actually got down. In the afternoon session, we did not get to finish the story, but will do so on Monday. The afternoon session had the opportunity to play on the big kids' playground so we did that instead because opportunities for that are limited.
