With all the rain, today was the perfect day to talk about rain! We know that rain is important because it helps plants to grow. Today we talked about how we feel on rainy days. Some children said they are scared on rainy days because of the lightning and thunder. Other children are happy on rainy days because they like to jump in puddles. Some children said they are sad on rainy days because they have to stay inside. Yet other children said they feel sleepy on rainy days. That must explain why the children were requesting to nap at school today... I told them that they could take a nap during playtime and several children chose to read bedtime stories and rest at playtime today.
Our story today was about a rainy day. In the story, everybody was grumpy because of the rain. The rain put everyone in a bad mood. Then the sun came out and everybody was happy and nice to each other again.
Then we learned the song "It's Raining, It's Pouring." We read the story, which had some extra verses that went through different types of weather, such as sunny days, snowy days, windy days, and cloudy days.
Today we made rain booklets. The children are getting so good at pointing to each word as they read. We have some good beginning readers in 4K! See if your child can read his/her book to you at home tonight! The children had to draw raindrops on each page and illustrate the last page in the booklet. Some children were creative and instead of drawing an umbrella, they drew the sun and said that it stopped raining. Others also drew a rainbow because they remembered that rainbows come out when the sun shines through the raindrops! After finishing their books, the children read to either Mrs. DeKeyser or myself.
Playtime was next! They enjoyed hearing the sound of pouring water in the sensory table and comparing it to the sound of a rainstorm. Some children built with blocks while others played in dramatic play. Yet others wrote, colored, or did puzzles. There was a lot going on during playtime!
After snack, we wrote about what we like to do when it rains.
Have a great weekend! :)
