We marked where our treasure was on a map for our letter Xx books.
Then we read a story about a boy who became a pirate. At first the boy liked being a pirate because he didn't have to eat spinach or carrots and could do what he wanted. Then he discovered that pirates don't tuck children into bed at night, read bedtime stories, or give bedtime kisses. After that, he did not want to be a pirate anymore. The boy helped the pirates bury their treasure in his backyard, made a map to mark where it was, and stayed behind to protect the treasure while the pirates went back to sea.
After the story, we learned a pirate rhyming song. The children had a great time acting out the song and coming up with rhyming words for each number! Check the "Here's the Scoop!" that went home yesterday to see the words to the song.
Next it was time for silly centers! We had to visit 3 centers again today! At Mrs. DeKeyser's center, the children made pirate faces to display in our classroom.
At Miss McCabe's center, we played a life-size pirate board game! The children had to roll a die and move that many spaces. If they landed on a crocodile, they had to complete the task so they would not be eaten! There were silly tasks, like flap your arms and quack like a duck. There were also other tasks, such as sing the alphabet song, count backwards from 10, and spell your name. The children also got to "walk the plank" (balance beams) in this game. The goal was to get to the X. Once we got there, the children got to look in the treasure chest and choose one treasure to take home. Several chose rings, pirate eye patches, and compasses.
At the third center, the children worked at the writing center. Some children made pirate stories using blank booklets. They drew pictures and wrote words to go with the pictures. Other children were busy drawing pirate treasure maps to show where their treasure was hidden.
Afterwards we played. Several children chose to practice walking the plank. The sensory table was still in high demand.
After snack, we read another silly pirate story about a classroom that went to sea and had a run-in with some pirates. It was a rhyming story!
Then we heard about Brownie's adventures. The children are excited to see who can bring Brownie home tomorrow!
We did the counting jar in the morning session while the afternoon session played a pirate number squeeze game.
Then it was time to play outside!
Tomorrow we will learn about another type of person one may see visiting the ocean!
Next week is Read Across America Week. We will be doing Dr. Seuss activities in honor of his birthday. Would there be anyone willing to bake cupcakes to send to school on Thursday, March 7th? Please let me know if you are interested!
