We also learned some new pirate vocabulary while playing a "What's Missing?" game. The children also have enjoyed picking up some new pirate lingo, such as landlubber and Ahoy!
Today we did some silly centers. The children had to visit three centers today instead of their normal one center! At Miss McCabe's center, we played alphabet bingo and used pirate treasure as our bingo markers. The skill the children worked on at this center varied based on their needs. Some worked on uppercase letters, others lowercase letters, and yet others worked on beginning sounds.
At Mrs. DeKeyser's center, we worked on our writing skills and concepts of print. The children had to illustrate each page in the book and write the word to match the illustration. Then they had to read it to a teacher and a friend. Please take the time to have your child read his/her pirate book to you at home tonight.
The third center worked on fine motor skills while pokey pinning the letter Xx. There were two different versions the children could choose from - simply the letter Xx or a trickier version of a treasure map with an X on it. They find this activity very relaxing.
Next it was playtime. The children especially enjoyed exploring the sensory table. In the table there was sand, sea shells, and buried treasure. There were also shovels, pails, and other tools to help the children find the buried treasure.
After snack, we spent some time learning about our new letter Xx. We learned that "kisses" do not start with the letter X, but sometimes people write the letter X to mean kisses and the letter O to mean hugs. This was introduced in the letter Xx booklet your child will be bringing home tonight.
The children also learned that not many words start with the letter X, but there are some words that end with x, such as fox and box. We practiced making the /x/ sound - it sounds a little like /ks/ - while tracing over X-ray x.
Then we pretended we were pirates! We looked at a map and had to put a big red X where we would hide our treasure if we were pirates.
Today we also made pirate hats so that they would dry in time for us to use them tomorrow for a pirate adventure! We are going to play a game that is going to lead us to some pirate treasure hopefully! The children are very excited! I told them that they may have to walk the plank tomorrow! Some children were asking if they could dress up as pirates tomorrow. I told them it wasn't necessary because we already have our pirate hats, but if they really want to and it is kept simple, I am fine with it. Pirate weapons, such as swords, must be left at home!
We finished the day by playing outside.
