Hey Diddle Diddle!

Happy Monday!  Everyone seemed excited to be back at school again today!  After writing our names for sign-in, we greeted each other with the song "Twinkle Friends."

We learned the nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle."  Everyone did a great job of picking out the rhyming words - fiddle and diddle, moon and spoon.  Way to go, 4K students!  We also learned what a fiddle is.  A fiddle is another word for violin.  Everyone was excited to learn that Miss McCabe knows how to play the violin.

Miss McCabe even had a book called "Hey Diddle Diddle."  We predicted whether or not the book would be the same or different from the nursery rhyme.  It was a little bit different.  The book had a lot of rhyming words so we listened carefully and raised our hands whenever we heard a rhyme!

Then we got to try jumping over the moon!  Miss McCabe had a huge moon!

We graphed whether or not we were able to jump over the moon without touching it.  That was a little bit tricky!  Then we discussed our graph.  We counted how many could and could not jump over the moon and used vocabulary, such as more, less, and the same (tie).

Then it was time to work at centers.  One center group played a "Hey Diddle Diddle" game with Mrs. DeKeyser.  Everyone got a sheet of paper with moons.  We had to roll a die that had either a 0, 1, or 2 on it, say the number, and count the corresponding number of cows onto each moon.  When our sheet was full of cows on the moon, then we won!  We spent some time talking about the meaning of the number 0.  See if your child can tell you that zero means nothing.  You can also download a copy of the game to play at home by clicking the following link: Hey Diddle Diddle Grid Game

Another center group played a "Hey Diddle Diddle" rhyming game with Miss McCabe.  We had to figure out which moon each cow belonged on.  Everyone is getting to be good at hearing rhyming words!

The third center group worked independently to make name constellations using our fine motor skills!  We learned that a constellation is a group of stars that when connected form a picture.  Miss McCabe taught everyone how to safely use push pins on the carpet to poke holes along the letters in their names.  We were excited to lift up the white sheet of paper and see our names formed.  When your child brings his/her name constellation home, try turning off the lights and shining a flashlight through it.  Your child's name should appear on the ceiling and look kind of like a constellation of stars!  Miss McCabe is so proud of how safely the children used the push pins today! :)

Then it was time to play!  Some of us got to play in the early childhood room today.  Each day we will rotate and a small group will visit the early childhood room to play.  Everyone is excited for when it will be their turn!  The exciting new area that Miss McCabe introduced was the space goop!  We had fun exploring its texture and different properties.  It was slimy, cold, and wet.

This week, we will work on making shape rockets during art.  This project will help us review shapes, colors, and positional words.

Then it was time for snack.  We learned that the moon has craters on it.  See if your child can tell you what a crater is.  We played a special game where we rolled a die and then counted that many Cheerio craters onto the moon before eating them.  It was a lot of fun.  You can also play this game at home by printing off a moon mat at the following link: Moon Mat

We also spent some time looking at books.

Miss McCabe taught us the song "Bingo."  We had fun trying to guess which letter Miss McCabe was going to take away so we could clap it instead!  We also sang the alphabet song and had to stand up or sit down when we sang the first letter in our names.

In the afternoon, we had a little bit of extra time so we worked on developing our vocabulary and visual memory while playing a "What's Missing? Astronaut" game.  We learned words, such as antenna, astronaut, crater, space suit, and air tank.

Then it was time to play outside and get ready for the bus.  Keep practicing putting on coats independently at home.  Being able to zip our coats independently is a skill that is assessed on the 4K progress report so we have been working on that at school.  It would be helpful to also practice at home!

It is my hope to make a special shape rocket snack with the children sometime this week to help reinforce shapes.  We could still use some Kraft singles cheese slices for this snack.  If you would like to donate some, it would be greatly appreciated!

What a busy, fun-filled day we had!  Have a great evening!
