Then we read a story that was similar to the song "Old MacDonald" and learned about other animals one may find by the pond. We talked about reeds and cattails, animals that live near a pond such as deer and raccoons, and even dragonflies.
We visited centers. At Mrs. DeKeyser's center, we made suncatcher turtles.
At Miss McCabe's center, we practiced hopping like frogs on lily pads. Our job was to collect a variety of pond animals. Then we sorted and graphed the different pond animals and practiced using language, such as more, less, or the same. We also read a silly counting story that was a good introduction to adding and subtracting.
The third center made a pond and ocean. Then they sorted the animals by whether they live in a pond or the ocean. Finally, this center group got to go play in Ms. Mader's classroom.
We also had a great time playing in the classroom. The children especially loved playing with the pond animals and Easter grass! There were eggs programmed with letters and the children tried figuring out which animal belonged in each egg (a - alligator, d - duck, t - turtle, s - snake, etc).
For snack we ate some special letter crackers. The children had fun identifying the letters they knew and some even spelled out words with the crackers!
Then we learned all about our new letter Gg. We learned a lot of words that begin with Gg, such as goat, gorilla, green, gold, glasses, girl, grapes, games, golf, and grass.
We also practiced making the /g/ sound as we traced over golden g. The children are very worried that a leprechaun may come into our classroom to take away golden g as leprechauns LOVE gold! They are already planning on making some traps to catch some leprechauns at school tomorrow! :)
We learned the rhyme "I Had a Little Turtle" today and will work on it all week. This rhyme is assessed on the PALS assessment that your child will be taking again in the spring. We made little turtle finger puppets to use to practice telling you the rhyme at home too!
In the afternoon, several children had made some books that they wanted to read to the class so we did that instead of the finger puppets. We still practiced the rhyme together and the children each got a turtle finger puppet to color at home! I was proud of some of the children who made booklets during playtime! They were writing complete sentences, such as "I see red." Way to go, 4K students!
Just a reminder that book orders are due tomorrow! Only one order has come in so far!
